WATER, WOOD AND WONDERMENT!

An environmental and developmental project by The City School, Sheffield working in partnership with Royston High School, Barnsley. In March/April 2007, 33 students from The City School and Royston High School, accompanied by teachers, engineers and a doctor.

Briefly below are some of the projects we were able to fulfil.

  1. Rebuilding of some of the Tsinyane access road

  2. Digging and rebuilding of the Tsinyane dam to provide vital water to the community

  3. Planting of many trees to provide fuel and reduce soil erosion

  4. Improvements to Malealea High School, including painting, tree planting and resurfacing.

These projects united communities from South Yorkshire and Southern Africa and showed the true strength of Pupil Power!

Specific projects

Timberland has donated £16,000 to spend on project work in Malealea.

In addition Timberland are providing clothing and footwear for members of the 2007 expedition and for the trecking and pony guides at Malealea Lodge. Plans to provide fuel efficient stoves that will burn smoke free in the traditional rondevals are underway. These will create a smoke free environment and reduce soil erosion as less wood will need to be harvested. Engineers from ARUP Sheffield are supporting this part of the expedition with their technical knowledge to design the stoves. More information here soon!
